Product Description

OCZ REvo 3 PCI Express Solid State Drives were designed with power users and workstation users in mind where storage I/O performance is essential for maximum productivity. Eliminating the SATA bottleneck, the PCIe based Revo3 delivers ground breaking 1GB/s of bandwidth and 130,000 4KB random write IOPS making this an ideal SSD for intensive multi threaded workloads, multimedia design, and workstation applications. Along with unprecedented performance, the Revo3 features OCZ's proprietary Virtualized Controller Architecture(VCA) 2.0which provides features including TRIM support and SMART data monitoring, something previously unheard of with PCIe solutions. In addition, the Revo 3's Super Scale storage accelerator enables scalable SSD performance and significantly reduces the host CPU burden inherent to competing

I got this for $179 when is was on sale, but with it being such a great buy I wouldn't hesitate to purchase @ $300 if it's what you need. Synthetic benchmarks on my computer show that I am getting above the rated Read and Write values, but there is a trick to it. Under normal operation you'll never see values like that. The benchmark software uses multithreaded operations that can saturate the throughput on the drive very easily. This however doesn't mean that you won't see awesome real life performance. I have mine sandwiched between two EVGA GTX 670 FTW graphics cards on an Asus Rampage IV Extreme motherboard and it does get a little warm, but I have had no issues at all since the initial install and cloning my original SSD. A lot of people say you can't clone a normal SSD to this one, but if your BIOS sees the RevoDrive and can accept it as a boot drive it will work just fine. You'll just need to make sure that the software you are using will work properly. For me the cloning process was effortless, but i did use paid software to do so (paragon hard disk manager 12 professional).

You'll want to make sure that your motherboard can boot to PCI-e devices and will support any of the Revo Drives as boot a device. I think it's safe to say that any motherboards that were built in the last year are going to work just fine, but verify if you can. Boot times are longer because it takes 5-8 seconds for the firmware to initialize before the operating system will begin to boot. I don't feel this is a negative at all, but there are some people that won't like this. This drive does support TRIM and its SCSI equivalent, dubbed UNMAP. Windows 7, however, does not support TRIM or UNMAP with this drive because Windows 7 only supports TRIM and/or UNMAP with AHCI devices. The RevoDrive 3 is seen as a Storport device, like other high-performance buses, such as fibre channel buses, and RAID adapters. Windows 8 does support TRIM and Smart for Storport devices so this might push you to make the move to Windows 8 sooner than later.

Overall I think this has truly been the best SSD I've owned. I don't get BSOD and speeds are consistent across the board for the past few months. One way I've tried to maintain the lifespan of my SSDs is by configuring a RAM Disk to store all computer Temp data/files that are accessed regularly as well as any internet files, browser profiles and extensions or applications that are very write intensive and have a small footprint. This can be easily accomplished with NTFS Junction Points, or just simple changes to where things are stored by default, or by installing them on the RAM disk in the first place.

OK, I did not give a full 5 stars to the product. But that is just because it took me 14 hours to make it work. After it works, I am as happy as a Labrador Dog with two tails. The problem is that the damn thing is very hard to install. At first I really did not know what I was doing, then at second I was in worst condition than at first. It took me hours to find out that I have to turn on the RAID in my computer for this drive, then while installing, Windows install would not recognize the card. The drivers the drive is shipped with do not work. I went to OCZ and downloaded the latest drivers. Finally, it recognized the drive, but it was intermittent. It would start installation and stop saying that there was no drive or that the drive can not be formatted, like three other messages that I don't remember now. Anyhow, after 14 hours, I have my SSD installed. My MOBO does not support RAID and SATA, to now I have to access my data from my old SATA drives connected to my USB and no way to connect another drive to the computer as SATA. Anyhow, the speed more than compensates for this drawback. I would not recommend this to a non-technical person thought. You really need to know what you are doing. OH in case you are interested, the Windows Score for this drive in my computer is 7.9, which is the highest number Windows scores in the index. Now my score is 7.4.

EDIT: OK, I jummped the gun with my previous review. After many, many, many blue screen, reboots, hangs, in only two days, I am sad to say that this is going back. I guess, I'll get a SATA one. This is definitly not work. Every couple of boots, it says 2.5 Gps or 5 Gps. if I leave for a couple of minutes I find the computer in "repair mode", doing chkdsk, or simply in an loop saying that there is no drive. Sorry OCZ, but this was a no go for me. I'll go with the SATA SSD instead of the PCI. I know for sure the SATA works since I had one and moved it to my Laptop after getting this one.

Oh well.

This is a really fast drive, but what I am looking for is stability more than speed. I used this drive as my OS drive for about 3 days until I started getting blue screens and decided to return it, I didn't have time to mess with it to figure out what was going on.
