I wonder how many gamers are unaware of just how amazing this motherboard is and that its features, if tapped into, will run circles around many of the "gaming motherboards". Don't let the WS fool you. How many people knew that the Z87 WS, Z97 WS, and now this Z170 WS; all provide 24 lanes compared to the 16 which is standard on the majority of boards ( not including the X boards with 40 lanes )? It has made it possible to run a high end Raid Card along side a Gen 3 X16 Graphic Card without knocking the video card down to X8. The features on this board are amazing and almost every one is useful and practical. I have used the ASUS WS boards exclusively now for 6 years and the failure rate is very low, but if you do need help, because this board is in the "Server" category ASUS treats you like a real V.I.P. !

UPDATE - After confirming additional bugs in the UEFI-Driver-O/S stack - this board has been returned. Also the AISuite utilities cause many crashes and extensive troubleshooting cannot resolve the issues. I expected much better stability from an ~$400 motherboard.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have built many systems. This Asus Z170-Premium system I have built (see config at the end) is so fragile it is a nightmare.

This system will crash, while in a sleep state. It will hang on the windows restart screen. USB devices
that work fine on other systems, will spontaneously disable/re-enable. It will hang on POST every few
    reboots.

After doing assembly and a clean Win10 install, here are just a few of the bugs I have documented:
    1) updates to the ASMedia SATA AHCI drivers from the standard Microsoft drives causes USB ports to be unavailable.
    2) updates to the Intel IRST AHCI storage controller drivers cause static interference with the Realtek audio subsystem.
    3) AISuite 3 causes many, many Event Log errors and causes general system instability, ACPI.SYS BSODs among other things.

Just a few of Event log errors for which ASUS is totally responsible include:
    a) ACPI Error 15 - The embedded controller (EC) returned data when none was requested. The BIOS might be trying to access the EC
without synchronizing with the operating system. - this one is a confirmed bug in AISutie 3.

    b) Kernel-PnP Error 219 - The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\WPDBUSENUM\
{205989ea-1601-11e6-bdc6-806e6f6e6963}#0000000008100000. - This one is well documented online with no solution.

    c) Service Control Manager Error 7034 - The Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology service terminated unexpectedly.

It did not occur to me at first that driver updates from the OEMs of the support chipsets would cause so many issues. The number of clean O/S
reinstalls I have done to troubleshoot is over 20!!! Not to mention dozens of System Restore operations.

There is no way to get a clean event log with Asus mobos I have learned, through online searches and trial-and-error, a/b troubleshooting.
Some of the conflicts in hardware and software and Event Log errors are disputed with finger pointing among the OEMs: Intel, ASMedia, Realtek, Asus and of course Microsoft.

To be clear, I have reinstalled Window 10 on this system many times and used only the latest BIOS and drivers downloaded from the Asus motherboard support website. No weird or unstable apps are installed. I just wanted to get a stable O/S before adding more variables. I have run burn in tests with the ROG Realbench and other similar tests, plus RAM has been thoroughly tested and etc.

It is clear that the hardware has not failed. ASUS has failed testing the drivers, O/S and UEFI. The Q.A. on this board, BIOS and drivers is very poor.

It's ANY other mobo brand for me in the next system build. So disgusted!!!

I'm really happy with this motherboard. Just put everything together (NZXT 410 Phantom case, GSKILL 32GB 3200 memory, 6700K, Samsung 950 Pro, Evga 850 T2 power supply, Evga 980 SC, Noctua UH-12S + extra fan). Updated to the latest bios (very easy). On first boot, the XMP profile for the memory wasn't enabled, but just clicking the XMP profile enabled it. This is my first ASUS board (a couple of EVGA boards previously), and I just started playing with their overclocking utility under windows 10. Was easily able to get 47,47,43,43 using a negative cpu voltage offset. Only negative was when I went to install some stuff off the supplied disk, seemed to force me to install Google Chrome, and also installed a security product without asking (easily uninstalled). I think the manual showed right angle sata cables, but sata cables are standard form. I will update this review if I encounter any issues.

I'm sure it's the same with all of them, but the IO shield was an absolute pain to install correctly. Once the board was seated in the case though, absolutely smooth sailing. The 6600k I purchased installed easily, as did the Evo 212 cooler. The pulsing led effects on the board are pretty neat. The BIOS/UEFI is absolutely stellar! I was able to update the BIOS with the internet from the BIOS. Overclocking was super simple and easy. The sound quality is incredible for being an inexpensive board and it makes even my cheap speakers sound great. Definitely would recommend this board for a beginner or budget build, and I'm sure it would even satisfy most enthusiasts.

Foolproof setup . . no glitches or problems. Snapped in the memory, connected the power lines and turned on the motherboard. First time around it did a couple of reboots and then eventually ended for the installation of the Windows operating system.

I have always used ASUS products and, to date, none have ever given be grief.

    Highly recommend their products.
