Socket space was a bit concerning, there are some VRM's rather close to the socket that almost interfered with mounting the cooler I chose, but they were just barely short enough to make it work. So keep that in mind if you wanna use a beefy air cooler or a special water block that extends farther out than normal.
Installation was easy, if you've ever installed a motherboard before. straightforward, no special screws needed or whatever. The cover over the rear io-panel has cutouts that make any screw perfectly functional for the purpose of fastening the mobo to the case.
My one and only qualm about this mobo (and this will likely only affect a minute portion of the users) is that it only has 2 traditional Video Output ports, even though the graphics chipset can support up to 4 (I believe, 3 at the least). I know in the near future, and even now, the USB type C can be used as a third monitor output if need be, but I find that somewhat inconvenient, as I was hopin gat least for a third port, be it a second HDMI or even a VGA output would have been fine.
The XMP option on this motherboard worked seamlessly with the crucial RAM I bought, and even with a non-k i5-6500 processor, I was able to squeeze a small 15% (self-advertised, says so on the splash screen when I boot it up) overclock, so that's a neat little feature. Had no problem installing and booting to the M.2 using an NVMe Samsung SM951, and God damn is this thing fast. It boots up in under 7 seconds from off, Including the amount of time it takes me to activate numlock and type in my pin. Absolutly fantastic.
I'm very excited for the future of this build, as I'll be doing some expanding once the GTX 1080 has a White Aftermarket shroud option.
Very satisfied with this build, and this motherboard made it all possible.
1. Read the very detailed instruction book before you begin. The second part of the instruction book covers the BIOS, which I found mostly self-explanatory. The first part of the instructions were indispensable. The instruction book for your case will probably be helpful too.
2. Look over all the parts that come in the box, and understand what they all do before assembling things.
3. Be aware that you'll need to install the standoffs in your case, and assemble whatever cooling solution you're using BEFORE mounting the motherboard in the case. I didn't do this, and I had to remove and reinstall (twice, sigh). Silly me.
4. There are lots of connector pins on the board for various things. They are labeled, but hard to read without a bright flashlight. The instruction book has a very good picture map of them all.
5. The package comes with *everything* that I needed, including the M.2 host adapter board, thermistors to monitor interior case temperatures. This package is loaded!
6. The two assist fans are hard to figure out. One goes on the top of the motherboard, in almost the exact center. You remove a metal cover that ends up being a keychain. That's what the little keychain cable was for! Told you it comes with everything. The other assist fan goes in the back, near the rear panel USB connectors. It's not hard at all to install, but neither is it obvious. I puzzled over this for a while before I figured out how to screw the fan to the plastic slider piece. Be sure to observe the airflow direction of the assist fans as you install them.
7. It comes with very competent on-board video, but of course you might want your own GTX 980 card instead!
8. With Windows installed on the M.2 drive, the thing boots up in like 4 seconds. Web pages appear instantly. This 6th generation technology is a huge step up from what we put up with only a year ago!
9. There are lots of options for overclocking, changing voltages, etc. BEWARE: If you don't know what you're doing here, you can do permanent damage. Best to work with someone who has done this before.
Hope you have fun building!
UPDATE 27/8/16: Stuck on post. The motherboard was working fine but then things got strange with occasional lock ups and odd crashes. I originally attributed the issues to Windows 10 until on startup, the POST took forever (3-5 minutes) to boot. Now, I'm stuck with looking at the "American Megatrends" logo on the screen, and that's it. It won't allow me to access the BIOS so I'm stuck with a dead motherboard. The support ASUS provides is via email and they are SLOW to respond. First email had me reset the bios which didn't do anything. Then I unplugged all the components and tried to reboot first with nothing, then one component at a time. As always, I'm stuck looking at this logo.
